Fluency (Due by June 24, 8:30 AM)


Give an example of a skill that students in K-12 need to be fluent (quick and accurate) in doing.

  • What are the subskills needed to be fluent in the skill you identified? 
  • Why is this a skill that needs to be fluent. 
  • What problems could it cause if the student is not fluent in the skill.

  1. Students need to be fluent in reading.
    Sub-skills: Students need to know the alphabet and the letter sounds, basic sight words.
    Why is this skill needed: Reading is a huge part of everyday life and students need to be fluent in reading to be successful in everyday activities. Students will use reading when grocery shopping, reading safety signs, ordering at restaurants, and paying bills.
    Problems: If students are not fluent in reading then they will have difficulty accessing the general education curriculum, community events and services, and entertainment activities.

    1. I completely agree that reading needs to be fluent in grades k-12. i have some students that could be seriously injured because they do not know how to read warning signs. Reading is a very big part of our lives.

  2. Students K-12 need to be fluent in Reading.
    Sub Skills- Students need to know letter recognition, phonics, decoding rules, a good base of sight words, vocabulary, comprehension.
    Why- This skill is needed to help a student be successful. Reading is used everyday. When that child grows up and needs a job, they need to know how to read in order to fill out a job application. Students need to be able to read warning signs to keep them safe from danger.
    Problems- Students may be at risk to danger, injury, or loss of life due to the fact they can not read a warning sign. Students could also fall behind in school because they are not fluent in Reading.

    2. Agreed. I too feel that Reading is an important life skill in today's society. I feel that Reading and Writing go hand in hand and are needed to be successful in the community. When these students grow up they will not only need to be able to read the job application, they will need to be fluent in writing to enable them to successfully fill out the job application.   3. Students need to be fluent in communicating there wants and needs. Communication sub skills is knowing how to respond, understand language rather it is eye gaze or pointing. It needs to be fluent for a person to communicate there wants and needs. A problem could occur because it could make it harder for the student to develop functional skills and get around in the community.

  4. Students, specifically students with moderate and severe disabilities, need to have fluent responses when asked personal information, either in written or verbal form.
    Sub-Skills - Students need to know the alphabet. Students need to know how to write and correctly spell their name and other identifying information.
    This skill is needed as a part of everyday life. Students need to be able to write their name on their paper or tell someone their name when asked. Also, students need to know their birthday, address and phone number in case they get lost or for job applications.
    Problems: If a student cannot tell somebody who they are, where they live, or how to get in touch with their parent or guardians in can put the child in danger. It can also affect the student getting a job after high school.

    1. I completely agree with this, all students regardless of disability need to be able to say or use a communication device to present their personal information. I make a trip to the courthouse each year with my class to get those that do not have one an identification card so that if an emergency happens then they can at least show the ID to someone for help.

  5. Students need to be fluent with identifying sight words.
    Students need to be able to identify beginning sounds, letters, and letter sounds. This skill is important so that students are able to become better readers, so they can move onto reading sentences, paragraphs, and then stories. If students are unable to become fluent in this skill then they will not be able to become independent readers which will affect them as adults.

  6. Students in grades k- 12 need to be fluent in the area of basic sight words.
    The subskills that are needed in order to be fluent in the skill of basic sight words would be able to pronounce the sound in each letter and to combined to letter sounds together in order to pronounce the basic sight word.
    This skill of reading basic sight words needs to be fluent in order for student to be successful with basic reading skills. This gives the students a place to start in order to gradually build upon better reading skills and learning to read new words.
    The problems that could be cause by the student not being fluent would be the child not being able to read. The child will struggle with being able to read as the child transitions from grade to grade and will continue to struggle in adult life.

  7. Students in K-12 need to be fluent in computer skills.The sub skills needed for computer skills is keyboarding skills, skills using a mouse, basic skills in the processing system being used. It is important for students to have a basic understanding of computer concepts so they can access information, produce, and publish information. By increasing their understanding of computer concepts students will be provided with technology that will increase their ability to learn and provide them with the opportunity for accommodations to help them to become successful. If students do not acquire this skill they limit their possibilties and put themselves at a disadvantage in a society that heavily depends on computers and technology.

  8. Students need to be fluent in spelling. Sub skills needed would include the ability to recognize letters and identify the sounds of each letter. This is important because it enables the student to effectively communicate thoughts and ideas when producing a written product. Students who struggle with spelling also have difficulity achieving reading fluency and struggle with comprehension. Students who are not fluent with spelling struggle to produce writing that is clear and coherent.

  9. Students need to be fluent in the area of writing. Sub skills that are needed in this area include identifying sounds of letters in a word and linking letters together to form words. These skills are important because it enables students to express themselves. Also, writing is an important functional skill needed to be successful in daily life. Writing is used in many ways from making grocery lists to writing checks. Students who are not fluent in writing will struggle with daily tasks in the classroom and in the community.
