Mental Model, Background Knowledge, & Video Anchor


Think of a time that you tried to understand, or you were trying to explain, something to someone, and a mental model, background knowledge, or a video anchor would have been useful to you. Include: 1) the situation, 2) what was said or read, 3) what made it difficult to comprehend, and 4) what would have aided you with either your comprehension or explanation.

Please see others comments first and avoid duplication. You need to (1) reply to 1 of your classmates'  their comments and (2) make your own comment. Be creative!

  1. 1)I tried to complete a reading standard were students had to understand characters and setting. 2) I read the book Diary of a Wimpy kid. My students could not remember the different characters. 3) My students had trouble remembering and distinguishing the characters. 4)I would have added the video of Diary of a Wimpy kid and a picture board with characters for students to distinguish the characters.

    1. It helps my students to better comprehend a story I have read to them If they watch the moving along with it. They catch on a lot quicker with the details.

  2. 1.) An opening in my school district came up and a friend of mine called and asked about the alternative certification process.
    2.) I explained that she would have to contact a university that offered alternative certification in MSD, and would have to apply to the college. I told her that she would have to take Praxis 1 so that she could be accepted. I explained that she would be certified through option 6.
    3.) My friend did not understand the differences between option 6 and emergency certification and struggled with differences between MSD and LBD special education.
    4.) It would have been easier if we were in person and I could show her the information on option 6. It would have made it easier for her to understand the differences between MSD and LBD if she had experience working in school that worked with both MSD and LBD students.She had automatically assumed that all special education certification was the same.

    1. I can see where that would be so confusing for someone with no prior knowledge. Good example.

    2. This would be difficult to understand without any knowledge of the prerequisites of alternate certification.

  3. 1) I had never owned an iPhone and was way behind as far as cell phone technology goes. Of course when I finally upgraded I wanted to put some ringtones on my new phone. My friend was trying to explain and walk me through the steps.
    2) She was explaining that I needed to go this website, click on ringtones, choose the ringtone making sure it was in the correct format, and all this stuff about iTunes. I had no idea how to do all that on a cell phone.
    3) I knew absolutely nothing about the iPhone. I only had experience on an android phone.
    4) If I had had some general background knowledge of a iPhone and the apps I probably could have understood it better and would have had an easier time completing the task.

  4. It is hard learning the differences between and iPhone and an android phone. The process is a lot easier if you have experience on different operating systems.

  5. 1. The setting was a beach in one of our stories in my classroom during my student teaching placement. The students were asked to draw the setting. The student wanted to know how to draw a beach. The book did not have any pictures.
    2. I instructed the student to draw sand and water. I did not give him any more instructions, because I was sure that he had seen pictures of a beach before. The student turned in his paper and the picture showed a bowl of water with pieces of sand in it.
    3. The student had never been to the beach and did not know what the beach looked like. The only instructions the student received were to draw sand and water. I was assuming that the student knew what to draw.
    4. I should have shown a model of a beach. The student would have understood what to draw and would have completed the assignment correctly.

  6. 1. I had been working with a student on using a for to eat with.

    2. While in the cafeteria, I had walked away to assist another student and came back to see the student using the fork on his cheeseburger.

    3. The student had always eaten everything with his hands, and I mean EVERYTHING! I had only instructed the student to use his fork before I had walked away.

    4. Even though we had been working on using a fork, I should have made sure to go over foods you can use your hands to eat.

  8. 1) I had been working with students on shapes.
    2) I had instructed the students to cut and paste the shapes from their worksheet on to another piece of paper.
    3) I did not say to cut on the dotted line. I was assisting the students when I noticed one student had not cut on the dotted line, but had cut random shapes in the middle of the paper.
    4) I would have modeled this for the students and showed them exactly where the dotted lines were.

  9. I was trying to explain to my mom on how to use SKYPE so I would be able to see her and my children while I am at school this summer at UK.
    I tried to explain to my mom that she needs to click on the Skype logo, and then select my name, and to click the video button in order to give me a video call. My mom does not do technology well.
    What made it difficult for my mom to understand was that if she click on the phone icon instead of the video icon she would not see who she was chatting with. It did take several attempts in explaining the steps, I then eventually showed her the things she needs to click on, I then modeled it for her, I then done an actual video chat with her using SKYPE. I am proud to say that she is now about to successfully video chat. She now understand what I am talking about when I say “Click on the Video button”

    What I should had done to begin with was to actually model for her how to SKYPE.

  10. I was out sick and was trying to tell one of my assistants how to customize a students communication device for that days activities. I always did all the customizing in the morning before the student got there so the assistants did not know how to do it (new device for the district and student). Since I did not have the device in front of me I was not able to say exactly what buttons to push and was trying to describe them to the assistant over the phone. After several attempts we managed to get the device set up for a simple day. However had I had it to do over I would have created a video at the beginning of the year showing how to customize and edit the application so that we all knew how to use it and change things on it. (this was actually done by the end of the year we all knew how to use the application and change and customize it).
